In the more than10 years since we started approaching authors for the first edition of the Textbook of Palliative Care, the world has changed in many ways.
Most particularly in health, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way that many aspects of health care are undertaken.
This new edition offers 86 updated or new chapters out of 108, written by over 200 contributing authors in their given fields, providing up-to-date information on a wide range of topics of relevance to those providing care towards the end of life no matter what the disease may be.
We present a global perspective on contemporary and classic issues in palliative care with authors from a wide range of disciplines involved in this essential aspect of care.
The Textbook includes sections addressing aspects such as symptom management and care provision, organization of care in different settings, care in specific disease groups, palliative care emergencies, ethics, public health approaches and research in palliative care.
The global reach of the chapter authors and the distinguished section editors made the job of the co-editors in chief, Roderick MacLeod and Lieve Van den Block, much easier.
Since the start of the pandemic few in healthcare have been as impacted by the pandemic as much as the interdisciplinary teams of palliative care practitioners who have responded so admirably, often in the most challenging of circumstances.
The role of the co-editors in chief and the eleven section editors is not only to provide guidance to palliative care practitioners, but they aim to inform and inspire researchers, educators, and policymakers in the global field of palliative care as well as in the adjacent fields of aging, long-term care, noncommunicable diseases, primary and community care, and beyond.
