Bear Cottage Children’s Hospice could not run without the help of the 110+ volunteers we currently have that cover on average 280 shifts a month. This is more than 10,000 hours of time a year that this wonderful group of people freely volunteer to play with children and siblings, help housekeeping, fundraising, work in the kitchen and garden. Even our assistance dog, Frankie, is walked by enthusiastic volunteers.
When families are going through the heart wrenching journey of having a terminally ill child, they are often so grateful to the volunteers who can spend time with a child or sibling, quietly make them a cup of tea and have a chat or just give them a well needed break knowing a trained volunteer is looking after their child.
Bronwen Simmons, the community relations manager at Bear Cottage said, “thanks to our amazing group of volunteers, our families can do as much or as little as they like whilst staying at Bear Cottage, allowing them to forget about some of the stresses of everyday life. They are there so mum and dad can spend time together, or with their other children to create special memories that will last long after their child has passed away.”
