New Children’s Book Offers Gentle Way to Start Conversations about Death and Dying

Categories: Opinion.

A recently published children’s book, written by grandmother Belinda Brock, aims to help children come to terms with the death of a loved one. The book, GG and Mamela, is beautifully written with illustrations by acclaimed Israeli artists Avi Katz.

The author describes the story as deeply rooted in her own experience. Her own mother was in hospice care and was visited by all of her 12 great- grandchildren. Initially hesitant to allow the youngest children to visit, they were allowed to do so and Belinda saw the positive outcome for everyone as a result.

Kirkus Reviews has called the book “A welcome addition to children’s literature about death and dying.” And Rabbi Evan Moffic, spiritual leader of Congregation Solel in suburban Chicago says, “It helps children cope with the death of a loved one in gentle and understanding terms. Belinda Brock has done a great service for children and parents alike.”

The book’s universal themes of life, death, family and loss are shared with the reader through the eyes of a child and ultimately reminds us that even after a person has died, love remains.
