International study on clinical practice guidelines for palliative sedation – help requested.

Two researchers in the ethics of palliative care – Dr Martyna TOMCZYK (PhD) and Prof. Ralf J. JOX (PhD, MD) – with the invaluable help of Mrs Cécile JAQUES (MSc), a medical librarian, all three from the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, are performing an international systematic review of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for palliative sedation in adults.

This research, funded by a grant from the Pallium Foundation (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland) and independent of any involvement from this sponsor, is being conducted in three main steps. In the first step, international electronic bibliographic databases are searched. In the second step, complementary searches are conducted. Finally, prominent experts in palliative care in each country across the world are contacted to obtain more detailed information about national and/or regional guidelines in their countries. If there are no CPGs for palliative sedation, this is also important information. The study protocol is registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO 2021 CRD42021262571), available from:

The authors will be very grateful to anyone who would like to help by sharing information on the guidelines for palliative sedation in her/his country. If you would like to contribute to this research, please contact Dr Martyna Tomczyk at the following email address:
