Palliative care is… Dr Stephen Connor

Dr Connor has worked continuously in hospice and palliative care for the past 37 years as a researcher, clinical psychologist, consultant, author, educator, advocate, and executive. He has been the CEO of four different US hospice programs and has been a consultant surveyor for the Joint Commission. Dr Connor served for 10 years in the leadership of the US National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), as VP for research and international development, where he developed the research agenda for US hospices. He is now focused on palliative care development internationally with the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA), and as a consultant to the Open Society Foundation’s International Palliative Care Initiative in New York. He also serves as consultant senior research fellow for Capital Caring in the Washington, DC area.

The future of palliative care is…

The future of palliative care is in low and middle income countries. We have somewhat reliable palliative care in high income countries but the real unmet need is in lower resource settings. How we meet those needs without the benefit of ample resources will take creativity, good will, willingness to do things differently, but most importantly the mobilization of community support.
