Dr Delaney is one of ten speakers taking part in University College Dublin’s TEDxUCD 2016 next month.
Her talk is entitled: “Grief, it’s complicated…10 per cent of the time.” Dr Delaney who is Irish Hospice Foundation’s Bereavement Services manager said:“Is all grief normal? Or is all grief complicated in its own way? We tend to hold strong opinions about grief, but often these beliefs are at odds with the research.
In my forthcoming TEDxUCD talk, I will examine some myths around grief and present the case for why grief should sometimes be diagnosed as a psychological disorder.”
TEDxUCD 2016 takes place on Friday 9 December, from 10 am – 4 pm UCD’s Dramsoc Theatre, UCD Student Centre.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
Dearbhla Burke, a chartered physiotherapist and a PhD student at the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science will present a talk on the day entitled ‘The insult added to injury’ on the day.
Dearbhla said, “During my talk I will highlight the significant problem of spinal cord injury pain and aim to explain how patients can have pain in an area where they have no feeling….the insult added to their injury.”
Dr Andrew Hogan who a senior scientist with the obesity immunology research group at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, and a research scientist at the UCD School of Medicine will present a talk entitled ‘Losing weight – why is it so difficult ?’.
Dr Andy Hogan said, “More and more we realise that weight loss is not as simple as energy in and energy out. As I will outline in my forthcoming TEDxUCD 2016 talk our research is trying to tease out the role of the immune system in the regulation of bodyweight.”
TEDxUCD 2016 is the fourth annual TEDx event held at University College Dublin and is organised by UCD Research and Innovation.
At TEDxUCD 2016 a combination of live speakers and a selection of TED Talks videos will be combined to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group of 100 attendees. The TED conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events, including TEDxUCD, are self-organised.
Wiebke Preuss, a Masters student at the Stockholm School of Economics, and currently an Erasmus Exchange Programme student at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, will act as MC for TEDxUCD 2016.

Dr Sandra Collins, Director of the National Library of Ireland, who graduated with a PhD in nonlinear fluid dynamics from UCD. Her TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘Memory keepers.’
Professor Ron Davies, a specialist in international trade and foreign direct investment, at the UCD School of Economics. His TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘The true trouble of tax trickery.’
Professor Michaela Higgins, a consultant medical oncologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, and an Associate Clinical Professor at the UCD School of Medicine. Her TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘The cancer story you haven’t heard.’
Duncan Lennox, a UCD graduate, is CEO and co-founder of Qstream, a spin-out from Harvard Medical School. Qstream is a mobile-first predictive analytics company with offices in Massachusetts and in Dublin. Prior to Qstream he co-founded and served as CTO of WBT Systems, a UCD spin-out company. His TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘The misunderstood brain.’
Associate Professor Patricia Maguire, whose research at the UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science and at the UCD Conway Institute investigates the changing messages blood can carry in inflammatory diseases such as ischaemic stroke, pre-eclampsia and multiple sclerosis. Her TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘Tiny bubbles to clean up disease.’
Dr Conor Mulvagh, a specialist in Westminster politics and Irish constitutional nationalism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, at the UCD School of History and at the UCD Centre for War Studies. His TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘Partition, where to draw the line.’
John Sloan, an MSc student in Computational Linguistics at the UCD School of Computer Science. John graduated with an MA in linguistics from the UCD School of Languages, Culture and Linguistics, where his focus was on non-verbal communication and feedback in performance. His TEDxUCD 2016 talk is entitled ‘Learning languages emotionally.’
