The onset of his illness was swift and it left my sons and myself at times positive that he could beat this, and at times negative, because this golf playing, trout fishing, farm-sitting man was becoming very ill. After six weeks in hospital he insisted he wanted to come home and so we took him home where we determined he would stay. And that is when the Hospice Sisters, with their calm presence became our life savers.
They took care of Owen with such loving care, they made him smile, they eased his pain and they brought a sense of peace to a situation which
we were doing our best to accept. On days that were beyond difficult, they brought sunshine, sitting us down and letting us verbalize the anxiousness and fear we were trying to keep inside. They showed us that it was okay to share a joke with each other, and with Owen, and for the rest of my life I will be grateful to Howick Hospice and the very special people who walked with us until Owen passed away at the end of November.
And that was not the end of their caring. Knowing that I would find a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear in the days following, helped me find my feet again. Howick Hospice and its staff of special people, deserve our loving support. I will be ever grateful that they are here.
