Hospice UK running webinars on nutrition in palliative care

Categories: Education.

Understanding and meeting the nutrition and hydration needs and wishes of patients is a key aspect of palliative care, and for many the issue of eating and drinking at this phase of illness can be complex and multifaceted, resulting in stress for the patient and their family/carers. It is imperative that this aspect of care is handled sensitively and with confidence by all members of the multidisciplinary team.

In a  series of four practical and informative webinars, Caroline Quilty from St Joseph’s Hospice  is  addressing  the themes commonly found to be both challenging and of interest for front line clinical colleagues and catering teams.

  • The webinars consider food and nutrition in palliative care – why it is important and what are the consequences of malnutrition?
  • Gain an understanding of the rationale for nutritional screening in palliative care and tools to consider.
  • Appreciate the impact of malnutrition and cachexia on the psychological and physical wellbeing of the person.
  • Consider the treatment of poor appetite and weight loss including practical steps that may be taken.

They aim to support those hospices with little or no direct dietetic service, and registered nurses and associated colleagues with an interest in nutrition should attend.

We are now halfway through our four webinars with the next one on Thursday November 16 in which Caroline will focus on identifying cachexia and its psychosocial impact.

To date we have had 40 sites join us on the two webinars. It is marvellous to have colleagues from care homes and hospices from across the UK becoming increasingly confident and happy to engage in the ‘chat box,’ asking and responding to questions  and sharing their practice. From such sessions we have identified a real interest in developing a palliative care screening and assessment tool.
