The briefing follows a recommendation from the independent review of the LCP that the pathway should be phased out over the next 6-12 months. A similar briefing for doctors and nurses was recently published by NHS England.
The briefing says that where the Liverpool Care Pathway is being properly used, it must not stop abruptly and that anyone already on the LCP can continue to be supported using the pathway, so long as the patient, family and clinician agree.
The briefing also covers what to do if a resident/client is not currently on the Liverpool Care Pathway, but are likely to die within the new few days and what to say to residents/clients and their families if they are anxious about the use of the LCP.
The briefing was produced in association with the Care Providers Alliance, the English Community Care Association and the United Kingdom Homecare Association and can be download from the end of life section of the SCIE website, under ‘resources’.
