Maidstone Road Run a runaway success for Heart of Kent Hospice

Categories: Fundraising.

On Sunday 6th March 423 enthusiastic runners of all ages took to the picturesque country roads around Linton, Boughton Monchelsea and the surrounding villages to take part in the 7th annual Maidstone Road Run in aid of Heart of Kent Hospice.

Runners set off on their chosen route in perfect running conditions (despite the wind chill) from Cornwallis Academy.   Runners chose either the chip timed half marathon, a 10K or 5K race or the family friendly 1K race.

The event has so far raised an incredible £16,435 for Heart of Kent Hospice.  In addition, the Hospice will benefit from a generous donation by event sponsor the Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS).

The 10k race was the most popular distance with 216 runners taking part in this year’s event.

The elite runners were quick to finish the half marathon with the first five runners completing the 13.1 mile route in 1 hour and 41 minutes.  The first five 10K runners were all back in 45 minutes. Whilst the first five 5K runners were crossing the finish line to receive their medals in under 27 minutes.

Around 40 enthusiastic children and adults took part in the family friendly 1K run, with many choosing to dress up for the occasion in some delightful costumes including Pocahontas, Spiderman and unicorns

Events Manager at Heart of Kent Hospice Erica Snow said: “It was incredible to see such a fantastic turn out this year after not being able to host the event last year due to the pandemic.  We want to congratulate each and every one of the runners who took part whether they were trying to beat a personal running best time or taking part with family and friends to remember a loved one. We’d also like to say a special thank you to the many runners who raised sponsorship through the event and made a donation in additional to their race entry.

“Over 60 volunteers generously gave their time to park cars, register runners, lead the warmup, marshal routes, hand out medals, take photographs and drive sweeper vans. Without our amazing team of Hospice colleagues, volunteers, sponsors and partnership suppliers it would not be possible for the event to take place, everyone was truly amazing!”

About the Civil Service Insurance Society

The event sponsor is The Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS) which was founded over 130 years ago to provide Insurance services to Civil Servants. From day one all its profits were used to support widows and orphans of deceased policyholders. Today CSIS is still a “not for profit” organisation, providing Motor, Home and Travel Insurance to current, former and retired Civil and Public Servants and their partners.

As a member of the Maidstone community, based in the heart of the town, and as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programme, they have been able to support local Kent charities by donating over £350k in the last 15 years.

CSIS, began supporting Heart of Kent Hospice in 2015, and is excited to be supporting what is an inspiring annual event that raises valuable funds for Heart of Kent Hospice.
