Text Santa – pledge an act of kindness

Categories: In The Media.

Daytime television programme This Morning is looking to put 50,000 acts of kindness back into the world. Through its Take a Moment campaign, the show is asking people to pledge a moment of kindness, be it donating food to a foodbank, sponsoring a charity event, or mowing a neighbour-in-need’s lawn. For each moment of kindness registered on the This Morning website, the government will donate £5 to the Text Santa charity appeal. Anyone can make a pledge at www.itv.com/thismorning-take-a-moment/your-moment

Commenting on the campaign, Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd said:

“There are lots of easy ways to give your time to help others – from having a cup of tea with an older neighbour, to helping out in your local area or making a regular commitment to volunteer with a charity or community group. That’s why the government are supporting Take A Moment by pledging £5 for the first 50,000 acts of kindness registered through the This Morning campaign. We hope that this campaign can help raise awareness and encouraging people to get involved.”

ehospice announced earlier this year that Help the Hospices, who was also chosen for the 2011 appeal, is one of six charities who will benefit from Text Santa in 2013. All the money raised through the appeal will be spilt equally between the charities, with half the funds raised for Help the Hospices going to the charity and the other half being spilt between its member hospices.

Text Santa has raised nearly £10 million for charities since it launched in 2011. However, it is not only financially that charities benefit, as the greater awareness of their services it generates in their communities also sees a rise in the number of volunteers, and in many cases leads to a longer term relationship being formed with people in their community.

The other charities to benefit from this year’s appeal are Age UK, Barnardo’s, CLIC Sargent, BeatBullying and the British Heart Foundation.
