Travelling fellowships open to applications

All three organisations offer individuals the chance to travel overseas to pick up new skills, observe best practice and do research in order to improve healthcare in the UK when they return.

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust’s Medicine, Health & Patient Care Fellowship is particularly interested in considering applications “from those involved with nursing and social care to improve care and respect for the dignity of the patient.”

The trust’s website states that “applications are invited from nurses, care staff, therapists, doctors and others involved in this area.”

The trust has previously funded a number of palliative care projects. For example, this year Miriam Johnson, a professor of palliative medicine from Hull, will be travelling to Australia to explore better research and better palliative care for people with disabling breathlessness.

Applications are open until the end of September. A full description of the application process is available on the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust’s website.

The Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust is currently offering Peel and Rothwell Jackson Postgraduate Travelling Fellowships, where those qualified and registered to practise in medicine, nursing or another health profession may apply to spend up to 12 months at a centre of international excellence.

The trust is offering a maximum of two fellowships, and applications must be completed by Sunday 1 November 2015. Full details are available on the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust’s website.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation has opened applications for travel scholarships to the value of £5,000. The scholarships are available to any nurses or midwives looking to “undertake study on an aspect of practice and/or education in the UK or overseas.”

The foundation has also identified end of life care as one of the key areas in which it is looking to fund scholarships this year.

Information about how to apply can be found on the Florence Nightingale Foundation’s website. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 29 July 2015.
