The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) is proud to debut the Diversity in Health Care video series for hospice and palliative care professionals that explore fundamental considerations for end-of-life care of patients who identify as Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Buddhist.
End-of-life care means more than treating physical symptoms—it extends to a patient’s psychosocial, existential, and spiritual needs. The free online learning resources were produced to foster a stronger understanding of the diverse communities our nation’s healthcare professionals serve. Culturally sensitive care builds trust and rapport with patients and families, increases treatment acceptance, and opens the door for continuing education about important health matters within all communities.
“These videos offer clinicians with an overview of end-of-life care considerations for individuals of varying faiths, which is imperative for meeting the needs of a diverse society.” says Komal Patel Murali, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, the 2023-2024 Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee Chair. “This effort is demonstrative of our ongoing plans to deliver high-quality educational content related to DEIB in the context of serious illness care for all our members.”
Increasing access to education and enhancing hospice and palliative care nurses’ cultural sensitivity are crucial action steps to increasing healthcare equity. When nurses can engage with an array of diverse cultures and patient communities, they can engage patients more easily and authentically. In turn, their patients will likely feel more at ease and trust the care they’re receiving.
HPNF received grant funding from the American Nurses Foundation and the Jack Buncher Foundation to produce the resources. Health care professionals are strongly encouraged to share the videos with colleagues and team members. To view the series, visit https://bit.ly/HPNFDEIB.
HPNF has been a catalyst of education, innovation, and professional development for nurses caring for our nation’s most vulnerable patients since 1998. Philanthropic support at every level enables the non-profit organization to impact the careers of thousands of nurses, provide grants and scholarships to increase education and certification, and support initiatives and research that strengthen our communities and advance our profession. HPNF also supports the major initiatives of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) and the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC).
