Heart of Kent Hospice launches 2023 Sunflower Appeal

Categories: Care and Fundraising.

The 2023 Heart of Kent Hospice ‘Sunflower Appeal’ is all about creating a special event where the local community can come together to reflect and remember the people we have loved and lost.

Sunflowers are the very picture of summer with their bright yellow petals and tall green stems and it’s easy to see why so many people love them and also why the sunflower is the emblem for our appeal.

The annual ‘Sunflower Appeal’ is one of the Hospice’s flagship events and is an opportunity to remember the smiles and memories that we have shared with our loved ones.

Three special events will take place on 7 and 11 June 2023 in the beautiful Hospice garden where everyone can spend time together appreciating the garden and viewing the wooden sunflower dedications.

Refreshments will be served from the café and there will also be an array of plants for sale.

Everyone attending can have the opportunity to dedicate a wooden sunflower in memory of a loved one.  All donations made will ensure local families and their loved ones can receive specialist care and support in their place of choice – at home, in the community or at the Hospice.

The care the Hospice provides does not stop when a loved one dies, with support continuing for a loved one’s family over the weeks and years that follow.

At the end of each event everyone can take their wooden sunflower dedication home as a reminder of their loved one.

This year’s Sunflower Appeal will take place at the Hospice on:

  • Wednesday 7 June 1:30pm – 3:30pm.  The remembrance service will begin at 2:00pm
  • Sunday 11 June | 11:30am – 1:30pm.  The remembrance service will begin at 12:00pm
  • Sunday 11 June | 2:30pm – 4:30pm.  The remembrance service will begin at 3:00pm

Sylvia Rothschild, Spiritual Care Lead at the Hospice said: “At Heart of Kent Hospice, we talk with patients and families about the importance of creating and sharing treasured and beautiful memories of loved ones. With that in mind, and the warmer weather just around the corner, we hope you will join us in the beautiful Hospice garden to create a display of wooden sunflowers, each one honouring someone special.”

About Heart of Kent Hospice

www.hokh.org

Heart of Kent Hospice has been providing free, compassionate, end-of-life care to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones in Maidstone, Aylesford, Tonbridge and Malling and the surrounding towns and villages for the past 31 years.

The Hospice has built an excellent reputation within the local community for the quality of its care, which has been further endorsed by the Care Quality Commission who awarded us with an overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ following an inspection in February 2017.

Our vision is for everyone living with a terminal illness in our community to achieve the best quality of life. We are committed to achieving this by enabling them to live in comfort, with independence and dignity to the end of their lives, and to support those closest to them.

Last year the Hospice cared for over 1,800 patients and their families in their own homes or at our Aylesford-based Hospice. Our services cost £5 million a year to run, and we depend heavily on our loyal community of supporters, whose generous donations and fundraising activities raise over £4 million.
